Clinging to Mother

Driving through Geelong on Sunday and came around the Bay to see a yacht race finishing.  Stopped to have a sticky beak and the Roulettes suddenly arrived and put on a show. More of the same tomorrow when we celebrate Australia Day and get all patriotic and proclaim our independence and nationhood and wave lots of Aussie flags.

The ones with the big Union Jack in the corner!

Remember, when we were kids Australia Day was very low key and now we have all this hype happening. I don’t understand it – flags flying from cars. Please excuse me American readers, but it is has not been the Australian way to be all so patriotic. And is it fair to our aboriginal people to rub our invasion in their face?

    My sentiments exactly.

Happy Australia Day to you all….have a great day, fill up the eskie with stubbies and tinnies, put another shrimp on the barbie, pack some tucker and have a bonza Australia Day picnic down by the billabong.

Oh, Shammy, is that all you think of us over there in polar bear land? I don’t drink, shrimps on a barbie is a myth perpertrated by Paul Hogan and anyone under 40 wouldn’t know a bonza from a billabong. Patriotism here extends to the fact it’s a holiday for the workers. :)

  3. The only time I ever riled up an Aussie enough for a fight was on Australia day. Good thing for me, I picked a little Aussie…

He kept saying “Not on Australia Day!” while I shoved his face into the grass and asked him politely to mellow out.

Yep, head held high, sing Advance Australia Fair then go out and get pissed and have a fight. About sums up the national fervour.
